Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
Our Fellowship Trained & Board Certified Pediatric Critical Care PhysiciansThe Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Sanford Childrens Hospital is a multidisciplinary unit that cares for critically ill and/or injured infants, children and adolescents. The unit is directed by three full-time, Fellowship Trained and Board Certified Pediatric Intensivists who are available 24/7. A Pediatric Intensivist is a pediatric physician specially trained in the care of critically ill or injured children. These critical care physicians are supported by specialized nursing, respiratory, pharmacy, social work and child life professionals. Patients admitted to the PICU range in age from a few days old to young adults. Our team of Pediatric Intensivists works closely with the childs primary physician as well as other pediatric specialists to provide the best care available for the critically ill pediatric patient. Patients cared for in the PICU have a wide variety of medical conditions such as respiratory problems, trauma, surgical procedures, cardiac disease and oncology issues. The PICU provides a team approach to the treatment of the critically ill child and includes other ancillary staff such as respiratory therapy, child life, nutritionists, speech therapy and physical therapy. Our on-site pediatric critical care team is also able to provide conscious sedation services to kids who are in the hospital or visiting for a procedure. This experienced team of critical care physicians also serves as medical directors for our Pediatric Transport Team. |
